I just had the supreme pleasure of working on Hot In Cleveland with Valerie. Not only is she talented, funny and gorgeous, she has a huge heart and very kindly gave me this chance to talk to you.
I'm an animal rights activist. You may have seen the Humane Society PSA I narrated with my rescue dog, Zoe. Here's the deal: America's Wild Horses are in trouble, and they need your voices. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has been systematically rounding up wild horses on our public lands at an alarming rate. BLM officials claim this action is to prevent the horses from starvation. The BLM rounds up the wild horses by helicopter, often driving the animals for hours to the point of exhaustion. This terrifying ordeal ends with horses separated from their families - the foals from their mares, the stallions from their herd - and they are trucked to "holding facilities" hours away.
In the most recent round up in Nevada, 1,922 horses were removed. At least two foals had been run until their hooves eventually separated from their foot bones, and the foals were put down. The trauma of this drive, resulted in upwards of 30 mares aborting late-term foals, and an estimated 26 horses died from injuries sustained during the chase.
It is believed that to date, more wild horses have been captured than remain on the range - and there are roughly 30,000 in these holding pens. These animals are incarcerated at the expense of taxpayers.
I urge you to look at the photographs of the wild horses they have been gathering. The vast majority of them are healthy. They have survived on America's public lands for hundreds of years, at no expense to you or me... these mustangs live wild and free and embody the spirit of our country. There are humane ways to manage the herds on the land they roam on, and we should demand more responsible usage of our taxpayer dollars.
Please send a postcard or letter to Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, and ask him to stop the roundups now. You can make a difference: A single letter is equal to 30,000 voices.
The Honorable Secretary Ken Salazar
Secretary of the Interior

Never doubt for a moment that your voice counts.
Thank you on behalf of all the horses and burros who don't have a voice.
With gratitude,
Wendie
