Betty White, Wendie Malick, Jane Leeves, Carl Reiner, Tim Conway, Joe Jonas, Wayne Knight -- I am so blessed to work with such a talented cast and wonderful co-stars on Hot in Cleveland. Behind the cameras, though, we have one of the most skilled teams of producers, directors and writers working to make the show successful, and I am learning so much from all of them.
The incredibly gifted Michael Lembeck, who starred with me on One Day at a Time, directed our pilot. Since then, we've worked a trio of directors - each helming three episodes. All three of them are lovely and interesting, and it's been fun to see how they approach a different episode.
Andy Cadiff directed Who's Your Mama?, Birthdates and Meet the Parents. It was a joy to work with him, and now he's directing our TV Land sister show, Retired at 35. Be sure to check it out. David Trainer directed The Sex That Got Away and Good Neighbors - so you will see his work this week. He is very cerebral in the way he approaches comedy, which is very different from my approach, and I liked learning from his perspective. Gil Younger, who is doing the last three shows, is fabulous and funny, and I think you will enjoy his approach as well.
I've been asked if it's hard working with so many directors and writers, and the answer is not at all. We have an amazing team of writers, led by Suzanne Martin, whose creativity gave rise to this show. On set, the writers' room is this wonderful, magical place - I've only been up there three times. This is a really tight writing group and Suzanne runs it all. It doesn't matter who is writing the episode - Vanessa McCarthy, Liz Feldman, Anne Flett-Giordano, Chuck Ranberg, Sam Johnson, Chris Marcil - they all gel and work so well together. They all seem to know exactly what would be coming out of these characters' mouths.
Suzanne is writing the final episode - which we are taping this weekend - and I'm looking forward to working with this team when we start back up in October for the next 20 episodes! |
