From Tim Conway to Joe Jonas, Hot in Cleveland was blessed with amazing guest stars in our debut season - and our second season is shaping up to be a blockbuster: Mary Tyler Moore, Melanie Griffith, Bonnie Franklin, Jon Lovitz. I wanted to figure out a way to capture the memories of working with these great actors, so I've started having them sign our script covers.
Yes, I'm asking them for their autographs.
I was so scared to have Mary Tyler Moore sign my script for me, but I took a breath and just walked up to her and said, "Hi Mary, can you sign my script?"
She wrote a very sweet note to me. Melanie Griffith was so gracious about it. Wayne Knight wrote on a tiny corner of the script - and when I asked him why, he said it was because he thought he needed to save room for others - so I just had him sign another one. I started this tradition a little later into production, so I went back and had Carl Reiner sign an old script.
Of all the guest stars we've had on the show, I forgot to have Bonnie sign a script. Can you believe it? I worked with her for years on One Day at a Time, and here we are together again, and I didn't get her autograph for Hot in Cleveland!
Usually, I'm on the other side of this transaction with a fan asking me for my autograph, and I'm happy to oblige, if I can. But asking can be a little nerve-wracking, so here's what I've learned from my script project.
First, I'm just like any fan - I want people I admire to sign a memento of the occasion. So, I take a breath to calm my nerves. Then I'll smile and just ask: "Could you sign this for me please?" Most actors will say "Absolutely!"
I don't want to infringe on personal time - like if they're having dinner with family and friends, I wouldn't approach them, and I certainly won't stare because that would make me uncomfortable. It's basic manners not to interrupt a conversation, obviously. But if we're on set and we've wrapped up our work, it's a very easy request to make. Just wait for a break, take a breath, smile and ask! What's the worst that could happen?
Because of all these amazing people I've been fortunate to work with this year, I knew I had to save these memories. Each of our Hot in Cleveland scripts is a different color, so my plan is to have each autographed script-cover signed and framed to hang in my office. I'll have a rainbow of different memories surrounding me as a work - and all it took was asking a simple question: Can I have your autograph? |

I'm not sure if you read these comments, but I thought I'd give it a try. I used to watch your show "One Day at a Time" when I was about 7-12 yrs old. I looked up to your character greatly and pretended to be you when I was young. I have great memories because of you and you gave me a friend through the TV. Now I'm 40 and I still love the reruns and recall the days I used to watch the show and pretend to be there. When I have rough day's even now, you still brighten my day.. Thanks for being a great role model for all these years.
Much love,
Shelly
Congrats and the best of luck!!! I was sooo happy to hearing about your wedding to your long-time boyfriend.
I have read both of your books and LOVED them. And, you look absolutely spectacular...only the best for the new year.
Love, The Mermaid
Thank you for writing this little blog. It makes it easier for us fans to know that actors also can get nervious around other actors/singers. It is nice to know that it is okay to ask for autographs. Thank you.
