Tom and Ludo's Special Negroni

© Paden Reich

This classic cocktail has inspired oodles of print since its inception in a tony Florence bar in the early 1900s when an Italian count with the name Negroni asked the bartender to make his Americano even more potent. Since then, notable admirers include Anthony Bourdain; my dear friend, the gifted chef Ludo Lefebvre; and my husband, Tom. In fact, Ludo and Tom bonded over this special version that includes fresh orange juice in addition to Campari while still relying on the entertaining partnership of gin and vermouth. Ludo makes them in a big pitcher, hence his and Tom’s lasting friendship. I prefer a demure pour in a stemmed glass, allowing for an aromatic scent of citrus between sips.

Instructions

1. Fill a cocktail shaker with ice; add the gin, orange liqueur, vermouth, and orange juice.

2. Cover with the lid, and shake vigorously until chilled, about 30 seconds.

3. Strain into an old-fashioned glass with ice, and garnish with the orange peel.

2 tablespoons (1 ounce) gin
2 tablespoons (1 ounce) bitter orange liqueur (such as Campari)
