If you’re picturing someone standing in her pajamas before watching a movie, dipping a pretzel in a jar of peanut butter and a can of chocolate sauce and then having a eureka moment, I will neither confirm nor deny the origin of this dessert. I will say that it’s slightly more involved than that description, or perhaps I should say it’s more evolved. Melt chocolate chips, dip ordinary pretzels of your choosing, and then pipe the peanut butter mixture and voilà, you have a nighttime treat that tastes like Reese’s Pieces. For variety, try butterscotch chips, white chocolate chips, or different types of chocolate. All of them have the same smile-inducing effect. They’re easy and dangerously good.

Instructions

1. Place the chocolate chips and 1 tablespoon of the shortening in a small microwave-safe bowl; microwave on HIGH until melted and smooth, about 1 to 11/2 minutes, stirring every 30 seconds.

2. Using a fork, dip the pretzels, 1 at a time, into the melted chocolate; let the excess chocolate drip off. Place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Chill until the chocolate is set, about 30 minutes.

3. Place the peanut butter chips and remaining 1/2 tablespoon shortening in a small microwave-safe bowl; microwave on HIGH until melted and smooth, about 45 seconds to 1 minute, stirring after 30 seconds. Spoon the mixture into a ziplock plastic bag; snip 1 corner of the bag, and squeeze to drizzle the peanut butter mixture over the pretzels.

4. Chill until the peanut butter drizzle is set, about 15 minutes.

1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
1 1⁄2 tablespoons vegetable shortening
3 cups miniature pretzel twists (about 4 ounces)
